Bright Talk
for flute, clarinet, percussion and piano (2016; 10 min.)
Bright Talk’s title reflects its incandescent energy and the tight communication among its interlocking parts. To elicit a wide spectrum of colors, I call for the flautist to play three flutes, the clarinetist to double on bass clarinet, the percussionist to play everything from tabla to dumbek to police whistle, and the pianist to use sheets of paper and guitar picks to draw unfamiliar voices from a familiar instrument. The first movement is a virtuosic workout with improvised solos, the second a mysterious, gently flowing river of sound, and the third a moto perpetuo full of fire and momentum.
