Mosaics and Webs
for flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba and percussion (2003; 12 min.)
The title Mosaics and Webs refers to two ways in which this composition’s musical phrases are put together. In some sections, short discrete phrases follow one another in succession to make a larger pattern, like the stones of a mosaic. In others, the musical lines are continuous and overlapping, interweaving to form a network or web of unfolding sound.
Getting as wide a range as possible of tone color and texture from a given group of instruments is always a priority for me. Hence the flute and saxophone doublings, the trumpet and trombone mutes, and the many instruments played by the percussionist.
Mosaics and Webs was commissioned by the National Association of Wind and Percussion Instructors in 2003, and was premiered the following year at that organization’s conference in Minneapolis, MN.
