Times and Places
for two pianos (2014; 7 min.)
On four occasions over a period of several months, I was struck by the beauty and novelty of the sounds around me. I took careful notes, knowing that I wanted to somehow engage as a composer with these sonic environments.
Times and Places is a translation of the sounds I originally heard into the vocabulary of sounds that pianos make. Other than transferring them to the piano, I decided to leave the sounds and their relationships alone, letting them recreate the soundscapes that captivated me.
While some of the titles hint at what the original sounds were, I prefer not to reveal anything more. Hearing sounds from the world outside as music emanating from musical instruments, will, I hope, allow us to appreciate the sophistication and beauty of the world’s sonic tapestry- and to carry this appreciation outside the concert hall.
