Weave
for Chinese plucked-string ensemble (2009, rev. 2013; 10 min.)
I love the clear and transparent sound of Chinese plucked-string ensembles. Each plucked note is a star, a point of light- or perhaps a stitch in a musical tapestry. In this piece of music, different patterns of plucks in each instrument work together to create a larger musical fabric in which images of beauty and energy appear, as in an intricate cloth made by a skilled weaver.
Weave is the second of my compositions to have been premiered by the Taipei Liuqin Ensemble, a chapter in an ongoing musical partnership I value deeply.
