Stations
for violin, piano and electronics (2012; 20 min.)
A ritualistic quality is present in much of my recent music, though it isn’t tied to any specific set of beliefs. During the course of Stations, both performers move at various times to different places in the performing space, in a way that feels ceremonial. This made me think of the Christian ceremony of the Stations of the Cross, which suggested a title for this piece of music, since it is also a journey through a numinous space. I composed much of Stations during a residency at the AIR Studio in Paducah, Kentucky. The premiere took place in 2014 at the Sound Symposium festival in St. John’s, Newfoundland, by violinist Veronique Mathieu, pianist Stephanie Chua, and sound engineer David Jaeger.
