Inspired by the fun I’ve had performing duets with my accomplished pianist friend Nancy Pounds, and intended to explore the many ways that two people on one instrument can relate to each other musically and theatrically, Three Piano Duets runs two pianists through all sorts of paces, on and off the keys. The first movement is a sort of onstage cartoon, with twin goofy characters chasing each other up and down the keyboard. The mood changes dramatically for the misterioso second movement, full of notes produced on the strings in multicolored ways, and of quietly rippling textures. The hard-driving finale is a percussive tour de force.
