Wellspring
for chamber orchestra (2001; 16 min.)
Wellspring is dedicated to my wife Marie-Susanne. The title refers not only to the role that a loving partner can play in one’s life, but also to imagination itself, the lifegiving source of creativity.
Wellspring was composed with the support of a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and an award from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. It was the 2009 winner of the Andrés Gaos Composition Prize sponsored by the Municipality of A Coruña, Spain, which led to premiere performances on November 10 and 11, 2011; Michal Nesterowicz conducted the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia. It has also been performed by the Chicago Composers Orchestra.
